Money, Money, Money, Money, MONEY!!!!

If you haven’t already done so, please come by the office and pick up your SUMMER stipend.  In order to recieve it you have to bring a copy of your most recent report card or transcript.  BTW, the stipends for last SPRING have expired.  Don’t let this happen to your SUMMER stipend….

THE EYE OF THE STORM

DO YOU REMEMBER WATCHING TELEVISION AND YOU SEE A HURRICANE AND ON THE OUTSIDE ITS ALL CALM, BUT ON THE INSIDE THERE IS SO MANY ACTIVITIES? WELL, THAT’S WHAT THE CONVENTION CENTER IN NEW ORLEANS LOOKED LIKE TODAY. IT STARTED OUT LIKE ANOTHER DAY, BUT BY THE END IT WAS NOTHING LIKE IT.  YOU CAN PICK A NUMBER AND TIMES IT BY TWO AND THAT WOULDN’T BE HALF OF THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE THAT WAS THERE. AS, WE WERE WALKING THROUGH THE CROWDS CELEBRITIES COULD BE SPOTTED IN EVERY CORNER. WELL, WE WERE WALKING… WELL TRYING TO WALK PEOPLE WAS JUST STANDING AT A STAND STILL. IT WAS THE MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. PARADE IN MIAMI, FLORIDA. THE LINE TO SEE IDRIS ELBA WAS SO LONG THAT YOU WERENT ABLE TO WALK BY THE AREA HE WOULD BE AT. THERE WAS SO MANY PEOPLE STANDING AROUND TO SEE HIM AND IT TOOK FOREVER. HE (IDRIS) WALKED RIGHT PASSED ME AND I COULDN’T EVEN MOVE.. LOL. I JUST STOOD THERE WITH NO EMOTION ON MY FACE. I CAN’T EVEN SAY “HEY”. THE FIRST 150 PEOPLE THERE WERE ABLE TO SIT DOWN INSIDE THE BLOCKED OFF AREA. TEN OF THEM WERE ABLE TO TAKE A PICTURE WITH HIM. OH YEAH DID WE TELL YOU THAT QUEEN LATIFAH WAS THERE AGAIN? WELL, SORRY BUT SHE WAS THERE AGAIN TODAY AND SHE LOOKED FAWLESS. TOMORROW IS THE LAST DAY OF THE FESTIVAL, BUT WE WOULD KEEP YOU INFORMED.

Update at Essence

Early this Moring excitement  was buzzing around in my group because today we found out that we would really start getting dirty in the most media  enforced way . From the beginning, we could feel energy from the convention center, even though it was empty.  As soon as we walked in the door we were thrown in to over drive, as ushers for a youth outreach ages 5-16. The performers were from all over and they threw love to all of the kids and they bounced and screamed their love back…it was bananas. Coca Cola brought a lot of young fresh faces to the scene…like the group Premiere, a young woman named Courtney and another young lady who had to overcome a lot to become a singer named Rachel. Just when you thought it was over, we had to give out bag lunches, and let me tell you…the lines were long and the kid’s were hungry and were very thankful for the food. We were rewarded with shy smiles and low thank yous…it really touched my heart. After a brief lunch, we went back to work making more bags for Sunday, you would think when we ran out of material for the bag we would go home… NOT!!!!

Then, we went to the Essence Bookstore .There, you had books of every kind, you would have thought it was a personal book store for President Barack Obama, because he was on every other book table. At the end of the day we were thanked and welcomed back to come help anytime. Our hearts were full of pride but our body was beaten down. Everyone’s head was rolling as the trolley bounced and turned along and after a short walk and a couple stops we were happy to see the St. Marie Hotel. Day 3 was a blast, but day four is when the heat turns up so kids bring your towel because it’s going to be hot.

Hello world, Look at Us!

The Upward Program at Famu in Tallahassee Florida is filled with talent. Dr. Seay is the head of Upward Bound and is responsible for recruiting such talent. The Upward Bound Program has programs such as music studio, which is where some of the students have a chance to display their talents, a basketball camp, which give the students a chance to show off their athletic skills, and the film studio which is responsible for making the reality series on the internet, ” Through the Crack: Its My Life”. The music studio is producing upcoming stars like Jerricho Lee who is a football star at Godby High School of Tallahassee Florida and is working on his first song and James “Trees” Ford who has already has made a track called “We Ridin” and is a junior at Jefferson Co. High School. The basketball camp has upcoming star like Renardo Stokes, who is a point guard at James S. Rickards as a junior, Micah Lee who also plays for Rickards but as a senior forward, and Jabriel Giddens who is a track star for Lincoln High school as a senior. The film studio is ran by Ms. L. Michelle, who was a anchor women The Black Family Channel watched by 100 million viewers. she is over the creation of the reality show and the whole crew. The talent level is high at Famu in their Upward Bound Programs. At the end of the day the talented teens work as hard as they play. The converse and eat in The Grand Ballroom to relax and enjoy their summertime as high school students.
